President Donald Lewis and the Harry S. Truman Color Guard, are shown here presenting Retired U.S. Army Colonel James L. 'Spike' Speicher, who was our guest speaker at the June 14, 2014 meeting, with a Certificate of Appreciation. Colonel Speicher's topic was on: “The Im­portance of the Valley Forge Encampment”. Colonel Speicher discussed the famous Valley Forge en­campment of 1777 - 1778. Despite disease and deprivation, the rag tag colonial rebels were turned into an army capable of standing strong.

The Harry S. Truman Color Guard Team participated in a War of 1812 Memorial Dedication on Memorial Day 2014. Four soldiers were remembered today, who fought in the War of 1812 and are also the founders of the Town of Kanza, which we know today as Kansas City. A dedication to Jacob Ragan, George Tate, William Gillis, and William Miles Chick was held at the Memorial Day event located at Union Cemetery in Kansas City, MO.

Compatriot Romie Carr and the Harry S. Truman Color Guard, are shown here with Cadet Joshua Ramirez. Cadet Ramirez is member of the Van Horn high school JROTC. He submitted an essay on the subject of “How the JROTC has prepared me to become a better citizen of the United States of America”. He is our chapter winner of the Knight Essay. His essay was then submitted to the State and he was the State award winner. It has now been submitted into the National competition. Joshua was accompanied by his parents.

Compatriot Lyles spoke on the Battle of Princeton. The Battle of Princeton was a turning point in the Revolutionary War. Having suffered grave defeats in New York in 1776, Washington now proved that his army could win; in addition, he now held a firm position in strategic New Jersey, which lay between the two great colonial cities of New York and Philadelphia.

The Harry S. Truman Chapter and Color Guard participated in a SAR Member Grave Marker Dedication for Compatriot Addison Chalmers Lawton at Mound Grove Cemetery, on Sunday, May 26, 2013.  Compatriot Lawton was an active member of the Harry S. Truman Chapter of the Missouri Society, Sons of the American Revolution. Compatriot David McCann and Jennifer Marks, daughter of Compatriot Lawton offered a tribute to Compatriot Lawton.

The British defeated the Americans and forced them to withdraw toward the rebel capital of Philadelphia. The engagement occurred near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

President Dirk Stapleton presented the NSSAR War Service Medal with certificate to Compatriot Carlin Talcott, at the January 12, 2013 meeting. The medal and certificate honors Compatriot Talcott for his public service to his Nation, while serving in the Korean War. We thank Compatriot Talcott for his service to this great nation. In addition, fellow Compatriots who served in the Korean War also recognized Compatriot Talcott during this ceremony.

President Dirk Stapleton presented BMO Harris Bank, N.A. branch representative Ms. Sherry Ring, with a Certificate of Appreciation and a HST Chapter Challenge Coin at the January 12, 2013 meeting. President Stapleton recognized BMO Harris Bank, N.A for their support and dedication in allowing the Harry S. Truman Chapter to meet at their facility on a monthly basis. The monthly meetings are held at BMO Harris Bank, N.A., 18811 E. Valley View Pkwy, Independence, MO 64055-7010.

President Dirk Stapleton presented the NSSAR War Service Medal with certificate to Compatriot Perry Dean “Bud” Marks, Jr., at the December 8, 2012 meeting.  The medal and certificate honors Compatriot Marks’ for his public service to his Nation, while serving in Vietnam and Southwest Asia.  We thank Compatriot Marks for his service to this great nation. Compatriot Marks’ wife, Martha Marks, also participated in the presentation ceremony.

President Dirk Stapleton announced at the 8 December 2012 meeting, that the HST Chapter has received a letter from the Center for Advancing America’s Heritage (CAAH) and a James Madison Lapel Pin. President Stapleton stated that the CAAH has recognized the HST Chapter for a $100.00 donation earlier this year.  President Stapleton presented the James Madison Lapel Pin to Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Toms, in order for him to place the lapel pin on the HST Chapter Streamer shown in the photo.

Pictured here is guest speaker, Mr. George J. Dunmore, at the 329th Harry S. Truman Chapter Meeting on Saturday, November 10, 2012. Mr. Dunmore spoke on the Tuskegee Airmen. During World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States armed forces. Mr. Dunmore provided historical events and current information and updates on the Tuskegee Airmen. There were 996 original Airmen. These included pilots, bom­bardiers, and navigators.

A genealogical DNA test looks at a person's genetic code at specific locations. Results give information about genealogy or personal ancestry. Generally, these tests compare the results of an individual to others from the same lineage or to current and historic ethnic groups.

The Harry S. Truman Chapter introduced Compatriot William D. Connelly as the newest meber to the Harry S. Truman Chapter at the 327th Meeting on Saturday, September 8, 2012. Compatriot Connelly was welcomed into the Harry S. Truman Chapter, after successfully transferring from the North Carolina SAR Society. Compatriot Connelly was presented with his chapter challenge coin during his introduction and was also welcomed by chapter members. Congratulations and welcome Compatriot William D. Connelly.

The Law Enforcement Commendation Medal was presented by the Harry S. Truman Chapter on Saturday, April 21, 2012 to Sergeant Stacey Edwards, who has served with distinction and devotion in the field of law enforcement. The medal recognizes exceptional service or accomplishment in the field of law enforcement. Eligibility is not limited to peace officers but extends to the entire range of persons who make and enforce the law to include but not limited to peace officers, attorneys, judges, and prosecutors.

President Dirk Stapleton presented Compatriot Addison Lawton with two Supplemental Certificates on Saturday, April 21, 2012, on his patriot ancestors, Patriot Michael Cary and Patriot William Fusion. Congratulations to Com­patriot Lawson! Compatriot David McCann was also present for the ceremony.

Historian Brian Smarker presented the Harry S. Truman Chapter with a proclamation signed by Kansas City Mayor Sly James, in honoring Major M.R. William Grebe, Medal of Honor recipient.  Major Grebe was honored on Sunday March 25, 2012 at his gravesite at Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery, which is located at 2201 Cleveland Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri.  The proclamation was read at the ceremony on National Medal of Honor Day.

The Harry S. Truman Color Guard participated in a National Society Sons of the American Revolution Book Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, September 10, 2011.  The book dedicated was titled 'The Last Muster: Images of the Revolutionary War Generation' by Maureen Taylor.  The Book Dedication Ceremony was held at the Midwest Genealogy Center, in Independence, Missouri.

Eagle Scout Joseph Daniel Moss was presented with his SAR certificate and SAR scouting patch by President Dirk Stapleton on April 9, 2011, for his Boy Scout Eagle Scout accomplishment. Eagle Scout Moss’ Court of Honor was 20 February 2011. His Eagle Scout project consisted of the design and building park benches for a local Veterans of Foreign War post in the Kansas City area. The local VFW post was very grateful for Eagle Moss's initiative and dedication in completing this Eagle Scout project.

Truman Chapter, who participated in a dedication ceremony on April 9, 2011, in which chapter member Harry Dexheimer donated the latest version of NSSAR Directory to the Midwest Genealogical Library in Independence, MO. The Midwest Genealogy Center (MGC) is one of the nation's preeminent resources for family history. The Genealogy Center features 52,000 square feet of space to house all the resources and technology.

The Harry S. Truman Chapter, along with other local heredity groups including the Captain Daniel Morgan Boone Chapter,Society of the War of 1812; and Westport Camp #64, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; conducted a recognition ceremony for a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient, Private Nathaniel Gwynne, buried at Kansas City’s Union Cemetery.  The ceremony was conducted on National Medal of Honor Day, 25 March 2011.

Mr. Lamberetson is the Director of the National Frontier Trails Museum in Independence. His topic was on the frontier heritage of the Independence area. Mr. Lamberetson provided information on the three principle trails which crossed the West, which were the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California. Ms. Lee is the Veterans Service Officer (VSO) for the Department of Missouri Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.  Ms. Lee discussed current topics that veterans are facing, and also provided information on pension benefits and entitlements to both veterans and surviving spouses of veterans. A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Mrs. Greer after her presentation.

The Harry S. Truman Color Guard participated in a National Society Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) DVD Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, April 10, 2010.  The Dedication Ceremony was held at the Midwest Genealogy Center, in Independence, Missouri. The DVD's explain the purpose and goals of the NSSAR, as well as a recruitment tool for all NSSAR Chapters in gaining new members to the NSSAR.

The Harry S. Truman Chapter awarded two Compatriots the Silver MOSSAR award, for their tireless efforts at both the Chapter and State of Missouri level.  MOSSAR Color Guard Commander Robert L. Grover and Compatriot William Hartman, have proven track records of accomplishment for their contributions both to this Chapter and at MOSSAR.  Without their dedication, this chapter could not be as successful as it is.  So, we feel very blessed to have these gentlemen supporting our organization.

The Harry S. Truman Color Guard participated in a SAR Member Grave Marker Dedication for Compatriot Herbert F. Simon at Forest Hill Cemetery, on Saturday, October 10, 2009.  Compatriot Simon was an active member and past Genealogist, Vice-President, and President of the Harry S. Truman Chapter of the Missouri Society, Sons of the American Revolution, and MOSSAR Genealogist from 1996-2000.  Compatriot Larry Loker offered a tribute to Compatriot Simon.

The Harry S. Truman Chapter celebrated their Fourth of July Luncheon early this year on June 27, 2009, at the John Knox Village in Lee's Summit MO on Saturday, June 27, 2009. In attendance included special guest speaker Mary Lynn Tolle, Honorary State Regent, Missouri and Vice President General NSDAR. Several D.A.R. members from several local D.A.R. Chapters also attended. Guest speaker Mary Lynn Tolle received the SAR Medal of Appreciation‏ from Compatriot Romie Carr and Major General Robert L. Grover.

Pictured here is the Harry S. Truman Color Guard and Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Harris, U.S. Army, (Retired). LTC Harris, a U.S. Army Engineer, has been a Revolutionary War reenactor since 1989. He has a deep interest in miltary history. He spoke on army sustainment, logistics and money as a weapon during the Revolutionary War. He spoke about the Revolutionary War being divided into three theaters, North, Middle [Geo Washington], and South [Gen. Nathaniel Green]. Tories wavered from Colonies to King George. Each state and congress printed their own money. An average soldier made 76.00/year [or 6.00/mo, 21cents a day]. The Dutch loaned money to the United States at the beginning of war, but at the end, none.

Mr. Sturdevant gave us an overview of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, especially events that took place as they passed through our local area. He also invited our members to attend the April 9th meeting of the Lewis & Clark group at the downtown library.

The Harry S. Truman Color Guard attended the 2008 Final Salute to Harry S. Truman at the Harry S. Truman Library on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 in Independence, MO. An American Legion Post from Kansas also was present for the ceremony.

The Harry S. Truman Chapter and Color Guard is shown here with Mayor Reimal, the Mayor of Independence, Missouri. As guest speaker, Mayor Reimal spoke at the Harry S. Truman Chapter Meeting in Independence, MO. on July 12, 2008.  Mayor Reimal provided a great insight to current issues being faced by local council members and taxpayers of Independence, MO, and the future of the city. His topics included Capital Improvements, the local School District, 353 Program, Enhanced Enterprise Zone, and other issues.

The Harry S. Truman Chapter and Color Guard attended the 2008 National Genealogical Society Genealogical Conference, held May 14-17, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in downtown Kansas City, MO. The NSSAR sponsored this event and members of the Harry S. Truman Chapter represented the Sons of the American Revolution exhibit. The theme this year is “Show Me the Nation’s Records.” Overall, there were over 1,600 people who attended, 125 exhibitors and 166 lectures and workshops.

The Harry S. Truman Chapter held it's 275th Meeting on May 10, 2008, in Independence, MO. Several events during the meeting included Commander James Nail, United States Navy Reserve, as guest speaker on May 10, 2008 speaking on Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan (OEF-A). David McCann receiving a Certificate of Appreciation for submitting seven new SAR approved applicants; and Carroll R.Reinert and Jimmy Mickleberry  receiving a Certificate of Appreciation as Secretary and Historian in 2007.

Robert Grover, a volunteer flag preserver and historian of the Revolutionary War, provides a “A Lesson In History”.  Grover explained to children at the Lone Jack branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library, how soldiers used their muskets. Grover has been passing on part of history for over 11 years.
