335th Meeting Harry S. Truman Chapter Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Award Presentation Independence, Missouri Saturday, May 11, 2013
President Donald Lewis and the Harry S. Truman Color Guard are shown here at the 335th Meeting on Saturday, May 11, 2013, presenting the Enhanced Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Award to Cadet Captain Leeland G. Lityma, who is a member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Van Horn High School. Cadet Lityma read his essay on “How the JROTC has prepared me to be a better citizen of the United States of America”. Cadet Lityma aspires to an appointment to West Point. Cadet Lityma was accompanied by his mother and Michael A. Byrd, Lieutenant Colonel-Retired US Army, Senior JROTC Instructor Van Horn High School.
President Donald Lewis also presented a Harry S. Truman Chapter challenge coin to Cadet Lityma. Cadet Lityma’s mother presented him with the Outstanding JROTC Cadet medal. President Donald Lewis introduced Lieutenant Colonel Byrd who gave us an overview of the JROTC program at Van Horn High School. The program has grown from 58 students to 162 students in the last three years. President Donald Lewis presented Lieutenant Colonel Byrd with a Certificate of Appreciation and a Harry S. Truman Chapter challenge coin.
