2008 Final Salute to Harry S. Truman Harry S. Truman Library Independence, MO. August 6, 2008
The Harry S. Truman Color Guard attended the 2008 Final Salute to Harry S. Truman at the Harry S. Truman Library on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 in Independence, MO. An American Legion Post from Kansas also was present for the ceremony.
About 15 World War II veterans assembled Wednesday at the Truman Museum in Independence. Led by an honor guard, they walked to the grave of former President Harry S. Truman, placed a small wreath and saluted.
Two years ago, members of the Harry S. Truman Appreciation Society announced that the group’s 2006 ceremony would be the last time it would publicly thank Truman for deciding to drop the atomic bomb in 1945. The brief observance was less elaborate than the one in 1995. Back then, the 50th anniversary of the bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, prompted an international debate over the wisdom of Truman’s decision.
