MOSSAR Color Guard

On behalf of the NSSAR and the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee, the Harry S. Truman Chapter awarded Mr. Julio Gonzalez with the Medal for Heroism at the 356th Meeting on Saturday, March 14, 2015.

The MOSSAR Color Guard Team participated in presenting and retirement of the colors during the Wreaths Across America Ceremony on December 13, 2014. The team participated in the Wreaths Across America Ceremony located at the Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grain Valley, MO, which honors Missouri veterans. The MOSSAR Color Guard team was privileged to meet Colonel Don 'Doc' Ballard, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient after the Wreaths Across America Ceremony.

Each MOSSAR Color Guard member stood watch, guarding two or more times during a 30 minute interval guarding the tomb of George Washington. MOSSAR Color Guard members were part of 19 Color Guard members there.

The Men’s Choir, “Men of Praise” performed patriotic songs to honor our Veterans and thank them for their sacrifice and service to our great Country.

The MOSSAR Color Guard team participated in a War of 1812 Patriot Grave Dedication event for Private Gilead Rupe, which was located at Machpelah Cemetery in Lexington, MO. The MOSSAR Color Guard Team presented the National Colors for the James Kearney Chapter, State of Missouri, National Society United States Daughters of 1812.

The MOSSAR Color Guard team participated in a War of 1812 Patriot Grave Dedication event for Private Isaac Gann, which was located at Mc Kendree Cemetery in Lafayette County, near Odessa, MO. The MOSSAR Color Guard Team presented the National Colors for the James Kearney Chapter, State of Missouri, National Society United States Daughters of 1812.

The MOSSAR Color Guard team participated in a War of 1812 Patriot Grave Dedication event for Private Sebastion Poisal, which was located at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lafayette County, near Waverly, MO. The MOSSAR Color Guard Team presented the National Colors for the James Kearney Chapter, State of Missouri, National Society United States Daughters of 1812..

The MOSSAR Color Guard team participated in a Memorial Day event located at Union Cemetery in Kansas City, MO on May 24, 2014 Union Cemetery Memorial Day, Kansas City, MO. The MOSSAR Color Guard Teams pays tribute to all veterans buried at Union Cemetery from the American Revolutionary War through the Vietnam conflict.

The MOSSAR Color Guard team participated in a Memorial Day event  located at Elmwood Cemetery in Kansas City, MO. The MOSSAR Color Guard Team assisted with the retiring of the U.S. Flag to the Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts then gave a new flag to the Elmwood Cemetery KC, MO.

The MOSSAR Color Guard conducted the 41st Annual Observance of President Harry S. Truman's birthday at the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, MO on Thursday, May 8th, 2014 at 9:30 AM.  In observance of this occasion, the Truman Library and Museum, and several area Truman-related organizations celebrated the 130th birthday (May 8, 1884) of the area's most famous citizen, Harry S. Truman.

An American Revolution War Patriot Dedication for Patriot Richard T. Bradley and his wife Abadiah Tompkins Bradley, was held on Thursday, September 19, 2013 by the Gilead Rupe DAR Chapter Dedication. The MOSSAR Color Guard from the Missouri Society of Sons of the American Revolution participated in the Dedication. The Dedication for Patriot Richard T. Bradley was held at the Blackwater Cemetery in Pittsville, Missouri.

Prior to the 80th Rededication of the Historic Truman Courthouse, the MOSSAR and KSSSAR Color Guard teams participated in the Historic Truman Courthouse Parade, located at Independence Square on Saturday, September 7th, 2013 which began at 1:45 PM in Independence, Missouri. On this special day, Jackson County officials celebrated this occasion with a formal rededication ceremony on the courthouse steps.

On September 6, 2013, President General Joseph W. Dooley returned to Kansas City to join Missouri Society President Richard T. Bryant in the presentation of a plaque to the Jackson County Historical Society to be placed permanently at the historic Harry Truman Courthouse in Independence, Missouri. The plaque, which was authorized by the Missouri Society in response to the Initiatives announced by the President General during the 2013 SAR Congress.

The MOSSAR and KSSSAR Color Guard teams participated in the Labor Day Parade, located at Main & Pershing on Monday, September 2nd, 2013 which began at 10:00 AM in Kansas City, Missouri. On this special day, we celebrate all Americans and their labor at work, home, and church and in service to country or community!

The MOSSAR Color Guard team participated in the Missouri DAR Dedication of Jane E.Clay Tribue, wife of Revolution War Patriot Edward Tribue located at Barkley Cemetery on Saturday, August 31st, 2013 in New London, Missouri.

The MOSSAR Color Guard, along with Westport Camp #64, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War;  conducted a Memorial Service for Cornell and Charles Crysler, to pay a tribute of respect to our Brother and his father buried at Mount Washington Cemetery in Independence, Missouri.

The MOSSAR Color Guard participated in the Armed Forces Day Parade located at Pershing Road and 26th Street on Saturday, May 18th, 2013 at 11:00 AM in Kansas City, Missouri. On this special day, our glorious nation celebrates Armed Forces Day, a day set aside to honor the five U.S. military branches. It was first observed May 20, 1950. In 1962 Navy veteran and President John F. Kennedy led the way in establishing Armed Forces Day as an official holiday.

The MOSSAR Color Guard conducted the 40th Annual Observance of President Harry S. Truman's birthday at the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, MO on Wednesday, May 8th, 2013 at 9:30 AM.  In observance of this occasion, the Truman Library and Museum, and several area Truman-related organizations celebrated the 129th birthday (May 8, 1884) of the area's most famous citizen, Harry S. Captain Daniel Morgan Boone was honored for his service to our country in the bicentennial year of the War of 1812 by his namesake, the Captain Daniel Morgan Boone Chapter of the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Missouri, with a Grave Marker Dedication, held on Saturday, December 15, 2012. President Brian Smarker, of the Captain Daniel Morgan Boone Chapter of the Society of the War of 1812; officiated the grave marker dedication ceremony.

The team participated in the Wreaths Across America Ceremony located at the Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grain Valley, MO, which honors Missouri veterans. The Missouri State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, hosted an opening ceremony for their annual Christmas open house at 5:30 p.m. November, 30th at 821 Main St. in Boonville.

The MOSSAR Color Guard from the Missouri Society of Sons of the American Revolution, participated in the 16th Annual Military Gala & Banquet, conducted at the Chateau on the Lake in Branson, Missouri on November 9, 2012. This event is hosted by the P.O.W. Network. All branches, all wars were welcome, in which they saluted Wounded Warriors/Purple Heart Recipients. There was a Dinner, salute, entertainment and fireworks. This is Branson's longest running tribute ball.

An American Revolution War Patriot Dedication for Patriot William McQuie, was held on Saturday, October 27, 2012 by the Bowling Green DAR Chapter. The MOSSAR Color Guard from the Missouri Society of Sons of the American Revolution participated in the Dedication. The Dedication for Patriot William McQuie was held at the Bowling Green City Cemetery in Bowling Green, Missouri.

Patriot Robert Lemon's 260th birthday celebration on Saturday, October 6, 2012, brought more than 90 people — including about 40 relatives from 10 states — to his gravesite on Creasy Springs Road to dedicate a new marker honoring his service in the Revolutionary War.  At the ceremony, the MOSSAR Color Guard from the Missouri Society of Sons of the American Revolution fired a salute.

The MOSSAR Color Guard Team participated at the Closing Ceremony each day on June 28 - July 1, 2012 at ''The Wall That Heals'' which was held at North Kansas City High School Footbal Stadium in North Kansas City, MO. It is estimated that over 15,000 people attended this event over the four day period.

The MOSSAR and KSSSAR Color Guard Teams participated at the Opening Ceremony at the Annual Conference of the Southwest Region National Association of Housing & Redevelpment Officials, on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, which was located at the Kansas City, MO Marrott Hotel.  This is the first event in which Compatriot Bob Corum played the drum.

The MOSSAR Color Guard Team participated at the Westport DAR Chapter 75th Birthday Celebration, on Monday, June 18, 2012, which was held at Linda Hall Library located at theUniversity of Missouri, in Kansas City, MO.

The Old Shawnee Day’s parade is one of the largest in the State of Kansas with awards given in several categories. The 2012 theme this year was ''Home Grown Fun''.

Both the MOSSAR & KSSSAR Color Guard Teams participated on Memorial Day 2012. The team participated in the Memorial Day event located at the Liberty Memorial tower in Kansas City, MO, which honors World War I veterans.

Patriot Henry Brooks was a Private in Captain Bluford's Company, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution. MOSSAR Awards Chairman Romie Carr and the MOSSAR Color Guard, on May 12, 2012, presented Ms. Katie Poggemeier the state winner of the 2012 George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest with the Essay State Medal and Certificate. She also received a check for $500.00 from the Missouri State Society Sons of the American Revolution. The subject of Ms. Poggemeier’s Essay was “Thomas Paine: The Man Who Changed Our Minds about Independence.” Katie is a senior at Odessa High School, Odessa, MO.

The MOSSAR Color Guard conducted the 39th Annual Observance of President Harry S. Truman's birthday at the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, MO on Tuesday, May 8th, 2012 at 9:30 AM. Brigadier General Scott Thoele, Deputy Commander, Fort Leavenworth, KS and Aide Major Dan Runyon are also shown here. Each Color Guard member received a Challenge Coin from Brigadier General Thoele.

The MOSSAR Color Guard, along with other local heredity groups including the Captain Daniel Morgan Boone Chapter,Society of the War of 1812; Westport Camp #64, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; and VFW Post 1738 from Independence, MO, conducted a recognition ceremony for a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient, Major M.R. William Grebe, buried at Kansas City’s Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery. Major M.R. William Grebe, 4th Missouri Cavalry, received the Medal of Honor in 1899 for his heroism and leadership.

The MOSSAR Color Guard conducted the 38th Annual Observance of President Harry S. Truman's birthday at the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, MO on Sunday, May 8th, 2011 at 9:30 AM.  In observance of this occasion, the Truman Library and Museum, and several area Truman-related organizations celebrated the 127th birthday (May 8, 1884) of the area's most famous citizen, Harry S. Truman.  In observance of President Truman's Birthday, Dr. Devine honored Truman's memory and his many accomplishments.

Her support for our cause makes her a valuable asset to our state society and has provided MOSSAR with untold goodwill and publicity with other patriotic societies. During the Fall Leadership Meeting held in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 24th-25th, MOSSAR State President Clifford Olsen and members of the MOSSAR Color Guard team, attended the the grand opening of the new NSSAR library in Louisville, KY. The NSSAR Library is housed in the historic district of Louisville directly across the street from the Louisville Slugger Museum, and separated by one building from the Frazer Arms Museum.

The MOSSAR Color Guard Team participated on Saturday, October 17th, 2009, at the Nathan Boone Homestead, located in Boonsville, MO, where they honored Nathan Boone by talking to children and parents about early frontier life. Early Missourians knew Nathan Boone as a hunter, soldier, surveyor and entrepreneur. They also knew him as his father's son. Boone, youngest child of the famous Daniel Boone, carried his family's legacy deep into the Missouri Ozarks and the American West.

New Brunswick , MO is the Pecan Capital of Missouri and the Home of the World's Largest Pecan - just three miles east of Brunswick is a really giant pecan. It is a replica of the Starking Hardy Giant Pecan discovered in 1955 by George James.

On September 20, 2009, Captain James Scott from the Independence Patriots Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, demonstrated the parts of a musket, the ball ammunition, black powder, loading procedures and firing of the musket. Several adults and children participated in firing several muskets. At the end of the presentation, a watermelon was used as a target. The watermelon was obliterated into small pieces with one shot from a musket.

The MOSSAR Color Guard Team participated with the Missouri DAR and John Guild DAR Chapter on Sunday, September 20th, 2009, in unveiling of a bronze marker placed at the entrance of the former Ste. Genevieve Academy.  The Academy is  the site of the first school started by the government west of the Mississippi River and opened in 1808. The Allen Laws Oliver, Fernando de Leyba, and Spirit of St. Louis SAR Chapters attended in attire from the Revolutionary Era.

Both the MOSSAR & KSSSAR Color Guard Teams participated on May 23, 2009, during the opening ceremony of the National Archives Dedication and Open House event, located at 400 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, Missouri.  The National Archives celebrate their 75th Anniversary and the dedication of this new facility. The new home of the National Archives at Kansas City, which is located within the historic Union Station cultural district, and in the heart of Kansas City.

The MOSSAR Color Guard Teams participated in a Flag Raising at the Lone Jack, Missouri Elementary School in Lone Jack, MO on Friday, May 15, 2009. The Independence Pioneers DAR Chapter coordinated to have the flag flown originally over the United States Capital Building and then subsequently donated the flag to the Lone Jack, Missouri Elementary School. In addition, the Independence Examiner on May 20, 2009 published this news story on page A-7.

In addition, this year’s ceremony allowed the retirement of several U.S. Flags in a respectful ceremony.

Both the MOSSAR & KSSSAR Color Guard Teams participated on Memorial Day 2008. The team participated in the Memorial Day event located at the Liberty Memorial tower in Kansas City, MO, which honors World War I veterans. In addition, this year’s ceremony allowed Missourians to salute and present a flag to native son Frank W. Buckles, who at age 107 is the last known U.S. veteran of World War I.

The MOSSAR Color Guard team participated in a Memorial Day event on Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Floral Hills Cemetery in Raytown, MO. The MOSSAR Color Guard Team pays tribute to all veterans buried at Floral Hills Cemetery.

Union Cemetery originated in 1857.  The new cemetery was located between Westport and the town of Kansas City and was to be used by both towns, becoming a 'union' between the two. This is how Union Cemetery got its name.  It is only fitting to conduct a U.S. Flag Dedication to the 31 Star U.S. Flag, since this is the flag that was the official flag during this period.  The 31 Star U.S. Flag became the Official United States Flag on July 4th 1851. A star was added for the 31st State - California.

Both the MOSSAR & KSSSAR Color Guard Teams participated in the American Revolution War Patriot Dedication for the Patriot Elizabeth Duncan Porter on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Union Cemetery in Kansas City, MO. The Major Isaac Sadler-La Belle Vue Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is proud to honor the memory of Mrs. Porter by installing and dedicating a marker. Porter and her family were among 129 persons taken captive on June 26, 1780 at Martin's Station on Stoner Creek.

A recently new member to the MOSSAR Color Guard, Compatriot Carold Bland, has been very busy this past two years. His list of accaomplishments vary and are quite numerous.  The activities include presentations to several DAR Chapters, participating at Green City High School on Veteran's Day, 2007;  
Queen City Missouri Pioneer Days Parade in the Fall, 2007; the American Legion Post 20 in January 2007; Kirksville, Missouri Over 50 Club on April 3, 2008; and the Kirksville, Missouri Adair County Interagency Council on April 11, 2008.

Governor Matt Blunt declared April 26th, 2008 to be Missouri Sons of the American Revolution Day at a ceremony held Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at his office in Jefferson City, Missouri. The proclamation, sponsored by MOSSAR, commends the increasingly important role of the institutions of American freedom, an appreciation for true patriotism, a respect for our national symbols, the value of American citizenship, and community service.

MOSSAR Color Guard members are shown here at the James Hopkins grave marking ceremony on Sunday, May 1st, 2005. In the summer of 1781, James Hopkins, at the age of 16, was drafted into the Continental Army.  He served as a Private in COL Thomas Farmer's North Carolina regiment. He participated in the Battle of Eutaw Springs in South Carolina.  James Hopkins died in 1849 at the age of 84 and was buried in the family cemetery on his farm, located about two miles west of Fair Play on East 425th Road in Polk County
