The granite marker, along with ones located in New Madrid, Cape Girardeau, and Ste. Genevieve were installed by the Missouri Daughters of the American Revolution in 1917.

Flooding problems, as well as as the installing of athletic fields and parking in the vicinity put the marker in Kimmswick at risk. It was decided to move the marker approximately 1/4 mile east to a location in Jefferson Square park, where it is much more visible and protected from flooding.
