Private Jacob  Hubbs
Missouri Society Sons of the American Revolution

Compatriot John Crandell lives in Salem, Missouri. He joined the Sons of the American Revolution and Harry S. Truman Chapter on 1 September 2010, sponsored by Compatriots David McCann and Chester Bare, and installed by Compatriot Dirk Stapleton.  John is retired from the United States Navy Reserves and Federal Civil Service.  He was also a merchant for many years.

Ancestry:  Patriot Jacob Hubbs assisted in establishing American Independence as a Private, Maryland Militia; and Private, Virginia Militia.  For six months in 1777 and at the age of 16 he was assigned by Capt Herricks’ Company, Col Barrentt’s Maryland Regiment as a ranger protecting the frontier settlers.  In 1779, he settled in Kentucky and served under General Clark’s command as a scout along the Ohio River, monitoring British movements and skirmishing with the British allied Shawnee.  Jacob was a prisoner of the Shawnee in Ohio for three months.  His service is documented in his pension claim S-16421 at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, publication George Rogers Clark and His Men: Military Records, 1778-1784, and as DAR Patriot #A059533.  Jacob returned to military service during the War of 1812, as a Private, 13th Kentucky Militia.

Jacob Hubbs was born 30 October 1762, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; died 15 February 1843, Bullitt County, Kentucky; and is buried at the Smith-Hubbs Family Cemetery, Bullitt County, Kentucky.  His grave is registered with the SAR Grave Index and has been honored by the local SAR chapter.

Jacob’s father Captain Samuel Hubbs, Royal British Army came to North America with his family to receive a Nova Scotia land grant, however the land had already been settled so the family relocated to Maryland.  Jacob’s father also assisted with establishing American Independence as a Lieutenant with the Maryland Militia.

Jacob married Aseneth Mary Williams (daughter of John and Mary Williams) on 18 January 1791, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  She was born December 1777, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky; and died 16 June 1842, Bullitt County, Kentucky; and is buried, adjacent to Jacob’s grave at the Smith-Hubbs Family Cemetery, Bullitt County, Kentucky.
